If you are concerned about your hair loss, you may have considered undergoing FUE hair restoration surgery. This is a surgical procedure in which a surgeon removes healthy hair follicles from the back of the scalp and transplants them into balding areas on top or in front of the scalp. As simple as it sounds, there are important pre- and post-surgery considerations that the doctor will discuss with you. Here is short summary of those discussions:
Before Your Hair Transplant
Before you undergo hair restoration surgery, it is important to have a detailed consultation with the surgeon who will be performing your procedure. Initially, this may take the form of a phone conversation with our doctor with the aid of pictures or even a skype phone call. Eventually, a face-to-face consultation is mandatory to fully assess your hair loss.
A consultation will give you an opportunity to meet Dr Paraskevas who will take a detailed history and perform an examination of your hair loss. You will get a chance to discuss your goals and expectations and ask any questions you may have about the FUE Process. Dr Paraskevas will determine whether you are a good candidate for hair restoration surgery and also give you an idea of how many grafts you will likely require.
It is also important to speak with your hair restoration surgeon about developing a long-term plan for combating hair loss.
The Day of Your Hair Transplant
When you arrive at our clinic, you will be greeted by our hair transplant team who will guide you through the check-in process, take a series of ‘before’ photos and explain what you can expect for the rest of the day.
Once all the formalities are over, you will be escorted into one of our treatment rooms and your scalp will be prepared for the procedure. One of our nurses will shave the donor area, mark it out into sections and get you comfortable.
FUE Hair Transplantation at Melbourne Hair Transplant is performed strictly under local anesthesia. At this time, anxious patients are provided with a tablet that will help them relax. Pain relief is usually not necessary at this stage.
Once the local anaesthetic is administered by Dr Paraskevas, he will begin the extraction of hair follicles from the back of the scalp. These follicles will be stored temporarily and then implanted back into the areas of concern. The extraction process will usually take 2-3 hours depending on the number of follicles required and this will be followed by a rest, at which point you will offered lunch and a rest room break. The implantation process will usually take 2-3 hours again depending on the number of follicles. Most Hair Transplant Procedures take between 4 and 8 hours to complete.
What to Expect After Your Hair Transplant
Upon completion, the donor area will be bandaged and you will be given a post-surgery instruction leaflet that the nurse and doctor will run through with you. You may have very mild soreness and some swelling in the treated areas later that evening or the next day.
Special care must be taken in the ten days following hair restoration surgery so that you do not accidentally dislodge any of your new grafts. We will advise you to avoid heavy exertion or exercise, vigorous combing, swimming or direct exposure to sunlight. This will allow the hair grafts to have a healthy and seamless transition process. Within 1-2 weeks, you will be able to get back to your normal routine. You should begin to see new growth of your transplanted hairs about 3 months after the FUE procedure with excellent growth between 8-10 weeks and the full result at 12-14 months. Don’t forget that most patients will experience shedding of the transplanted grafts in the first couple of months which should not concern you. With shedding, the bulb of the transplanted graft remains intact but the hair shaft breaks away to allow a new healthy hair to grow through.
